Safety Leadership – Expert Reference Group

by | Jul 31, 2021

I’m delighted to let everyone know that I have been appointed to the Workplace Health & Safety Queensland’s Safety Leadership at Work Expert Reference Group.

The Safety Leadership at Work program is designed to improve safety culture and contribute to reducing work-related injuries and fatalities in Queensland workplaces.

Safety leaders exist everywhere within our organisations and communities – the common factor is their desire to create safer and more productive workplaces.

Organisations and individuals can join the program, and learn how to foster and build a positive safety culture through:

  • events, tools, and resources
  • updates on leading industry practices
  • direct access to business leaders
  • networking opportunities

The Safety Leadership At Work Program invites and welcomes participation from everyone:

  • employees, supervisors, managers and business owners
  • small, medium and large companies
  • public, private, and not-for-profit organisations.

As a member of the Expert Reference Group, I hope to be able to bring my experience across industry sectors – particularly agriculture and mining – to helping create a culture of safety across Queensland.

A better approach

I believe that creating this culture of safety is a better approach than the “safety management by the kilo” approach of producing vast “Safety Manuals” that are purchased, printed and then left in a folder on a shelf somewhere.

Safe practices are what matters, not printed manuals.

I’m really looking forward to meeting my fellow Expert Reference Group members at our first meeting on August 20th in Brisbane.
